Several monasteries have been excavated at Nalanda,
a monastic university. The plan is fairly uniform with a
rows of cells opening off a central courtyard.
Takht-i-Bahi, in present day Pakistan is one of the most
impressive of the early monastic remains - about 1st CE.
Shrines containing stupas and statues are set around a
large courtyard. The monastery is in the background.
There are clear signs of Greco-Roman influence with columns
mounted by Corinthian capitals.
