The Buddha's five friends remembered how they had parted and to begin with they ignored him. His radiance was too appealing and eventually they prepared as seat and sat before him.

The Buddha gave his first discourse - the Dhamma Cakka Sutta - to his five friends. Kondanna, the oldest, immediately understood the truth being taught. It was not until the second teaching - the Anatta Lakhana Sutta - that the other four realised the truth. The Buddha ordained them and there were now five monks.
