junk stupa

home made

This page looks mainly at the development of the traditional stupa form in the West. As Buddhism spreads in America, Britain, Europe, etc. there have been many stupas built either as part of a monastery or meditation centre or just 'on top of a hill'. Ideally they can perform the same function that church spires have over the centuries - as a simple landmark in the distance, but more specifically pointing to or reminding us of our spiritual home. We can set our direction in life relative to these simple, elegant monuments.

As with the page on recent stupas the aim here is not so much to provide more technical information (see the book for that) but to give a feel for the current work that is being done in various countries in relation to different Buddhist traditions.

A group of 8 photos of stupas [30k] from around the world. Location information is limited to the country.

Here are three pages showing the construction of a replica of the Burmese Swe Dagon pagoda in New Zealand.

A collection of about a dozen pages following the construction of a 120% replica of one of the 72 upper stupas from Borobudur, Indonesia. [also see: ANCIENT - Borobudur]. This is at Amaravati Monastery in Hertfordshire, England.
