The wonderland that is Swe Dagon Pagoda
in Rangoon, Burma.
The main stupa (above, left) is 110 m high and is plated with over 30
tons of gold, brought by millions of pilgrims over several hundreds
of years. According to legend it was built by two merchant brothers
- the first lay disciples of the Buddha - who received eight strands
of his hair which have been enshrined in the stupa. The site has numerous
smaller stupas and temples and is incredibly alive with the throng of
devotees. |
