Sangha

sangha assembled in faith The Sangha as a refuge?

The Sangha is traditionally thought of as those people ordained as Buddhist monks and nuns. It is especially those people following the Buddhist way of life. The idea is that they try following the Buddha’s teachings, observing the rules of moral conduct that he laid down. In this much they can be trusted and   this trust can be seen as a refuge. On a much broader level sangha can be seen to include all those people who are trying to live a good life - practising kindness, compassion, generosity, etc. So, taking refuge in Sangha is taking refuge in morality, in goodness.

The word ‘sangha’ literally means congregation, and refers to all beings making an effort to live a good and moral life and to realise enlightenment; this includes both ordained and lay people. This effort involves studying oneself, being  honest and reflective around the things you do and say. The Sangha are like students of the Buddha.

I can take refuge in Sangha as the trustworthy followers of the Buddha and, take refuge in the goodness of a caring & moral society.
