The
main image is a glass-etched reproduction of the stone
'reclining Buddha' at Polannaruwa in Sri Lanka. This
small room behind the main Temple shrine is the Chapel of Rest and on
occassion deceased friends of the monastery are laid to rest here. This
creates an opportunity for friends and family to pay their last respects
and it is also a vivid reminder of our own impermanence. The main Temple
image, sitting in the meditation posture, faces the east - the sunrise,
the new day, beginnings, enlightenment. This image faces the west -
sunset, endings, cessation, death. The reflection is not in any way
macabre or ghoulish but is an encouragement to consider the naturalness
of life's process.
