People who are dumb use their hands to 'speak' to other people, but everyone uses their hands to communicate. Each of these signs says something, they are language symbols. In the sign language of Buddha statues there are seven common hand gestures - called 'mudra'. Each mudra has a story relating to a special time in the Buddha's life.

Dhammacakka
Shortly after Gotama was enlightened he gave his first teaching - the Dhammacakka Sutta. The thumb touching the forefinger is like a wheel and all the other fingers radiating out represent the 'Four Noble Truths - and the 'Eightfold Path'. This is a gesture of teaching - it especially refers to the first sermon.

Abhaya
The Buddha's cousin was jealous of the Buddha's popularity and wanted to kill him. He wanted to be the leader of all the monks and nuns. So, he sent a wild, drunken elephant charging down the street toward the Buddha who raised his right hand and fearlessly radiated love & kindness which calmed the elephant. This is a gesture of reassurance, of loving-kindness and fearlessness

Bumispara
Just before Gotama found enlightenment, Mara, the tempter, tried to stop him. Gotama touched the earth, calling her to witness that he had purified his heart over many lifetimes and was worthy of enlightenment. Have you ever heard of someone being described as well-grounded? This gesture is one of making contact with the ground & touching the earth who witnesses all our deeds, good & bad
