| Trees are a common symbol for
nature. For centuries they have provided shelter for man
and animal alike. The Buddha was meditating under a tree when he understood the truth and became enlightened. This was in India at a place called Bodh Gaya, Known as the sacred fig, or in Latin, ficus religiosa, it is also referred to as the pipal tree. To Buddhists it is 'The Bodhi Tree' - Bodhi being another Pali word for enlightenment. A descendant of the original tree is still growing at Bodh Gaya and simlari trees are commonly found in Buddhist centres all over the world. Bodhi trees, and single bodhi leaves, are a symbol, reminding us of Buddha's enlightenment. Can you find one - a bodhi tree - in the picture on page 11? |
