SRI LANKA
This stone 'meditation Buddha' is heavily weathered but the features of the face are still quite clear. The simple style gives a feeling of the calmness and serenity that comes from meditation. The feet are in the half lotus posture, common for Sri Lankan images, both feet and hands slightly exaggerated in size.
BURMA
A 300 year old standing Buddha from Burma.
Notice the different style of robes. When this statue was made it was the fashionable to depict the Buddha as very royal. The robe edges are highly decorated and set with precious stones. This may have some connection with the story on page 6.
There is also a small myrobalan fruit in the right hand. It has medicinal properties and this idea of Buddha as a healer is similar to the one on page 14. There is a legend which says that this fruit was given to the Buddha after his enlightenment by the god Indra.
