Light is a symbol of enlightenment.
On statues this appears as a flame or a halo.

Gotama would have worn heavy jewelry.

This exquisite stone carving is from Burma and was made about 800 years ago. It is only 13 cms high and the detail is quite astomishing for such a small piece. The central figure is the Buddha sitting under a bodhi tree, touching the earth, at the time of his enlightenment
.

Long ears symbolise regal ancestory.

The other scenes show various events during the Buddha's life. On either side (at shoulder level) are similar pictures of the Buddha giving his first teaching. The top scene represents the final passing of the Buddha, the two scenes below this, the time of his birth.
